The Design Process is a structured sequence of steps. Each project will vary, and some steps might overlap or be customized based on the specific needs of the project.
The first step in the interior design process is to connect with a member of our design team through a Discovery Call. This initial conversation provides an opportunity for both you and the designer to assess whether we can meet your needs.
We believe that a successful design relies on core principles like balance, rhythm, contrast, and proportion. A well-considered approach to these elements will create a cohesive space, regardless of the style. Therefore, you want a designer who:
- Works within your timeline and budget.
- Listens to your ideas and integrates your personality into the design.
- Understands your pain points and goals.
- Possesses both aesthetic vision and technical expertise.
Once you’re confident you’ve found the right fit, you can proceed to schedule your in-person, on-site consultation.

The On-Site Consultation marks the start of your project. Our initial consultation typically lasts two hours and is a paid service. This phase focuses on asking questions and defining goals to fully understand your vision and desired outcome. In this meeting, we’ll discuss functionality, style, examine how the space currently functions, how it needs to in the future, and the needs of those using it. We will also outline the design process, and review the contract.
Get ready for an exciting phase of Schematic Design! Durning this phase, our design team will create a preliminary design. We will conduct a site survey, taking measurements and photos, and may set up a shared Pinterest board for inspiration. Initial floor planning starts here, including the development of flow patterns and features. At the end of this phase, the team will review initial plans, conceptual ideas, and a budget estimate with you to ensure that everything is in alignment with your vision.
This phase involves:
- Developing initial space planning diagrams to address layout, functionality, and circulation.
- Considering general interior finishes for budget purposes.
- Refining budget, scope, and vision.
The deliverable is a presentation of rough concept layouts, which may be revised based on feedback. You’ll then sign off on a final concept to proceed with further development.
After the initial plans are approved, the Design Development phase begins with a "trade day," where we will review the preliminary ideas with contractors and tradesmen to obtain initial construction bids.
During this phase, our design team finalizes all drawings, sources materials, fixtures, and furnishings, including tiles, lighting, finishes, countertops, cabinetry, paint colors, flooring, plumbing, appliances, and furniture. Once these details are settled, they update the budget and timeline based on vendor pricing.
At the end of this phase, you’ll review a detailed design presentation, including material samples. If needed, the team will make adjustments and present updated plans. The goal of Design Development is to solidify the design direction and refine all details.
This phase involves:
- Developing a detailed floor plan and specific finish and fixture recommendations.
- Selecting appliances and equipment.
- The client signs off on these details before moving to the final design phase.
During the Construction Documentation phase, most decisions and options have been finalized. The focus now is on addressing any remaining details and questions. This phase involves creating detailed notes, floor plans, and images to provide comprehensive information necessary for constructing the project. Overall, this phase ensures that all documentation is complete, procurement is managed, and construction is monitored for successful design implementation.
This phase involves:
- Documentation Preparation: We will create a specifications notebook for the contractor, including final floor plans and detailed sheets for finishes, fixtures, and furnishings. All drawings are shared with you, the contractor, and necessary trades, and permits are obtained, if applicable.
- Accessories and Procurement: The designer begins gathering accessories and final touches. A list is compiled, a retainer is collected, and purchasing and procurement of merchandise are managed. Deliveries are coordinated, and items are inspected for quality.
- Project Management: The designer conducts a walk-through with the contractor to start construction, makes site visits to ensure the design is being implemented correctly, addresses any issues, and adjusts plans as needed. They also verify the placement of fixtures and flooring and coordinate with additional vendors.
In the Construction Administration and Installation phase, this is where the project truly comes to life, with the implementation of design elements and active construction.
- Contractor Engagement: Bids are obtained and contractors are hired. Permits are secured if required.
- Ordering and Delivery: Light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, furniture, and other items are ordered, shipped, received, and installed.
- On-Site Work: The general contractor and subcontractors carry out the construction work.
- Designer Involvement: The designer conducts on-site walk-throughs and oversees the installation of key elements like lighting, furniture, and art.
