One Room Challenge Fall 2021- Week 2

My Design Concept

Hey, Y’all!

It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge Fall 2021 and I am still developing my design plan.  In the interim, I have created 3 checklists to help this process move as smoothly as possible.  The items that are definite in this makeover are painting the walls and the front door, and refinishing my grandmother’s buffet cabinet.

Hopefully, I will have selected the art and accessories for this space by week 4.  Being the owner of an online home decor shop is not going to make this an easy process because I have so much to choose from and shopping is my favorite pastime.  LOL!  But I am confident that my final art and accessory selections for the space will fall in line with my concept…bold, colorful, and dramatic!  So make sure you subscribe to my mailing list for all the updates.

List #1 – Room Preparations

The first list is what I need to do to prepare the space for a little cosmetic surgery.  This is all about filling the nail holes in the wall with spackle, sanding areas that need to be smooth, and making sure the walls are clean and free of dirt and dust.

The flooring was a concern, but I have figured it out.  As you can see there are 2 types of tile.  There was a foundation problem that had to be fixed, so the original tile was discontinued and what’s there now (darker tile) is the closest that we could find and it looks a hot mess.  My plan is to use carpet tiles or a custom runner because we can’t have a crappy-looking floor in my bold, colorful and beautiful concept. Now, the hunt is on!

  1. Painter’s Tape
  2. Sandpaper
  3. Tack cloth
  4. Paint
  5. Paint roller and pan
  6. Dropcloth

List #2 – DIY Refinish Buffet Cabinet

This vintage case good is going to be the star of the show.  It has a lot of great memories for me.  This cabinet housed my grandmother’s dinner napkins, formal silverware, and other items she used when entertaining.  I remember when she would let me polish the silverware for our annual church banquet.  She would pull out her fine china, wine goblets, candelabras, and all the decor we had to use to set the table.  This was my introduction to event planning and design.  I’ll try to find pictures of the buffet in its original state before my mother refinished it to what it is now.

My mother refinished it over 25 years ago using a whitewash technique to give it an aged look.  It was beautiful then, so now it’s my turn to give it a bold and beautiful makeover.

Checklist:

  1. Sandpaper
  2. Tack cloth
  3. High Gloss Paint
  4. New Drawer Pulls and Backplates
  5. Gold Leaf/Gold Paint for detail work
  6. Paint Brushes

List #3 – Accents & Accessories

This list is about what’s needed in the space to bring it all together.  These are the basic ingredients that will bring my Bold, Colorful & Dramatic concept to life:

  • Floor Covering
  • Ceiling Light
  • Light Switch Plate (DIY)
  • Wall Art/Decor
  • Lamp
  • Accessories

Concept: Bold, Colorful & Dramatic

But, before I get down and dirty with prepping the space, I want to share the mood board of how I want the space to look and feel.  “It’s going to be Bold, Colorful, and Dramatic!”
